Today’s Maronia settlement is estimated to have been established around 16th century, slightly northern than the ancient settlement. The village is also located in the foothill of mount Ismaros in approximately 200 meters high. The current location is far enough from the sea, therefore provides sufficient protection from a potential pirate danger as it is not visible from the sea despite its proximity.
Maronians have been proved great traders and since their early steps they managed to build strong economic bonds with other significant trade centers like Odyssos, Trieste, Constantinople and Smyrna. As a result, we are able to witness evidence of their wealth in various forms of urban architecture in the wider area.
